The 49ers enter its’ Bye Week riding high with a win, now looking to add one of the offense’s key components in Christian McCaffrey after the break.

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan gave a modest update on the star running back Monday, indicating that if all goes well moving forward, he is expected to be on the practice field ahead of Week 10. However, there are strings attached. While CMC has suffered no setbacks for some time, he will be reevaluated after going through a gameweek-like workout regime during the bye.

“It depends how this week goes. He’s had no setbacks, so it looks like we’re on track,” Shanahan said about Christian McCaffrey Monday. “But he’s going to hit it hard this week while we’re gone and kind of simulate some practice stuff for himself. And as long as it all goes good, hopefully we’ll get him back in practice next week.”

Should he make it through unscathed, McCaffrey is on track to have his practice window during the 49ers’ bonus practice in one weeks’ time.

“If everything continues going right, if he has a good week this week,” Shanahan stated.

McCaffrey has been sidelined with bilateral achilles tendinitis since training camp. After appearing on track to suit up Week 1, he suffered a setback, and has been shelved ever seen. He was placed on the injured reserve in Week 2. Now a couple months removed, CMC is slowly regaining his former self, with the expectation that he will be back for gameday in the coming weeks.

But even then, there is no guarantee he will have his usual workload once he steps on the field.

“No, the expectation is just see how he is when he gets back and then evaluate him as he goes. Of course, the hope is that everything just goes back to normal and it’s perfect, that’s what we’re all striving for. But you’ve got to play that out smartly and you’ve got to evaluate that each day. What we see with our own eyes, what he tells us, that’ll be something we constantly are working through,” Shanahan explained.

Christian McCaffrey, 28, has been an offensive juggernaut since joining the 49ers midway through the 2022 season. The Colorado native has amassed nearly 4,000 scrimmage yards and 39 touchdowns (regular season and playoffs) in 33 games played in Red & Gold. He has also throw for a score as well, making him the complete package in Shanahan’s offense.

Aside from the star running back, the 49ers only have a few injuries to report from Week 8.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has a rib/oblique injury and will be reveealuted after the Bye Week. Same goes for RB Jordan Mason’s timeline, re-aggravating his shoulder sprain. Meanwhile, WR Chris Conley (hamstring) will be week-to-week, and linebacker Dee Winters is in the concussion protocol. Cornerback Renardo Green (ankle) is day-to-day.

Shanahan also mentioned that WR Jauan Jennings (hip) is expected to return after Week 9’s bye.
