John Lynch: 49ers, Purdy having “really good, positive discussions”

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has had a busy offseason as their roster experiences plenty of turnover, taking a clear defensive focus in the 2025 NFL Draft.

But perhaps the biggest question of their ongoing offseason is the future status of starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who still has yet to agree to an extension with the team that made him ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ by taking him with the final pick (262nd) in 2022.

In an interview on the NFL on NBC’s Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast, Lynch emphasized their focus on not making negotiations public.

“We’ve made it a practice not to talk about negotiations (in the media),” Lynch said. “And that goes back to when I was playing. I felt like that was my business and I didn’t want the world knowing it, so I’ve always been very sensitive to that.”

“But, what I will tell you and can tell you is we’re having really good, positive discussions. When it gets done? I’m not sure. I hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. So, we’re making progress. We’ve had good discussions.”

Purdy has been an active participant in their voluntary offseason workouts despite the lack of a current extension agreement.

General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan took six defensive players, including their first five selections. The guys discussed if that could be the influence of returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

“It’s really a different defense than the one that we were discussing at year’s end,” Barrows said. “They added a lot of beef to that defensive line.”
