49ers QB Trey Lance fully cleared to practice ahead of OTAs

While the news wasn’t a surprise to most of 49ers Faithful, quarterback Trey Lance has been fully cleared to practice in the offseason.

General manager John Lynch confirmed the news Saturday after the 2023 NFL Draft, hinting that he’ll be ready to go for the start of OTAs at the end of the month. The topic was broached by the Bay Area media, especially since fellow QB Brock Purdy is still recovering from off-season elbow surgery.

“Yeah. He’s been out there throwing and doing everything,” Lynch stated to the media Saturday.

The third-year QB from North Dakota State has been recovering from a fractured right ankle suffered Week 2 of last season. Only playing in eight games since joining the NFL, Lance will look to make the most of the 2023 offseason to establish himself with the 49ers.

According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, Lance has been fully healthy for about a month or so. He has spent time with Patrick Mahomes and his throwing coach in Texas, working on getting a shorter throwing motion.

In all practicality, Lance has been fully recovered from his Week 2 ankle injury for more than a month. He spent a chunk of March in the Dallas area working out with Patrick Mahomes and Mahomes’ throwing coach, Christensen, in an effort to shorten his delivery. Lance certainly wasn’t in pads or dealing with pass rushers — he was throwing to high school and college receivers — but he wasn’t restricted in terms of dropbacks or rollouts. Lynch has hinted that the work with Christensen was effective and that it will be apparent when Lance takes the field for OTAs next month.

The 49ers have also been linked in trade rumors for Trey Lance, with reports indicating that they have been fielding calls for the former first-round pick. However, John Lynch dismissed those notions previously, excited to have him on the roster for the 2023 season.

San Francisco is also content with the current QB room, despite Purdy’s recovery expected to take most of the. offseason. While the Iowa State standout has been called the “leader in the clubhouse”, the 49es will look to add another signal-caller for offseason.

“We’d love to get a fourth guy here,” Kyle Shanahan said. “We’ll see which one it is. We’ll be alright, though, in the offseason. We’ll get to training camp. Hopefully we’ll get Brock back soon. Regardless, we’d love a fourth guy here. You never know how much we end up doing in the OTAs sessions, but it has been good having two guys out there throwing. They have been on their own. We’ll start with everybody tomorrow where we can actually go out on the field with them as coaches. Hopefully when it’s said and done, we’ll have a fourth guy.”
