49ers re-sign OL Colton McKivitz to two-year extension
The San Francisco 49ers re-signed OL Colton McKivitz to a two-year extension Thursday, taking him through the 2024 season.

The San Francisco 49ers have locked down a key member of their interior Thursday, re-signing offensive lineman Colton McKivitz.
The team announced the extension Thursday, via a team statement. McKivitz will sign a two-year extension with the 49ers, keeping him in The Bay through the 2024 season. The details on the deal have not been disclosed at this time.
“Over the last three years (2020-22), McKivitz has appeared in 28 games (five starts) with the team. He has also played in five postseason contests for San Francisco.
“A 26-year-old native of Jacobsburg, OH, McKivitz attended West Virginia University where he appeared in 50 games (47 starts) over his five-year collegiate career (2015-19). As a senior in 2019, McKivitz was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year,” the team statement said.

Set to hit restricted free agency next week, San Francisco saves money with the RFA tender, able to find additional cap space for other needs across the team. While the swing tackle could be viewed as the team’s new starting right tackle, the 49ers could go back into the market for another player at the position.
With limited cap space in 2023, and a slow of players entering free agency, San Francisco locks up one of their most reliable guys in the trenches. One of those is Mike McGlinchey, hinting at a likely exit from the 49ers Wednesday. Looking to get a massive extension in free agency, the Red & Gold could be priced out of his market, setting up players, like McKivitz, to get an extended look in 2023.
Colton McKivitz, 26, finished the 2022 season with a 69.3 PFF grade, allowing no sacks all year. Regardless of the team’s needs, re-signing a young, versatile player on a cheaper deal is always good business for NFL franchises.
