In the history of the San Francisco 49ers franchise, only Steve Young and Joe Montana have hoised the Lombardi Trophy. In his second NFL season, Brock Purdy is looking to join those two Niner greats.

Montana led the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories in his 14-year career in San Francisco. Youg, his successor, was able to add one more before he retired in 1999. Since then, the Niners have only appeared in the Big Game twice, losing both contests in 2012 and 2019.

Heading into his first, and hopefully not last, Super Bowl appearance, Brock Purdy told the media what the two legends have imparted onto him.

“It’s been pretty simple in terms of [Joe Montana saying], ‘You’ve got a good team around you. Just obviously go through your reads and what Kyle [Shanahan] is calling. Trust in Kyle. You don’t need to be this superstar or anything. You can go out and just do your job, do it well, and you’ve got a good team around you and you guys can win that way,'” Purdy said.

The 24-year-old quarterback went on to say Steve Young talked to him about the mindset of playing in the NFL.

“With all the stuff going around on the outside, being able to sink back into what you believe and understand who you are, and what your purpose is. And then he spoke to the team about when you have an opportunity like this, you’ve got to take it. You can’t let it slide, “Purdy said of Young’s message. “There’s a lot of players in the NFL that don’t get opportunities to go to the Super Bowl and win it, so he was like.”
