During Friday’s edition of The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, the guys were joined by Greg Papa, the radio voice of the 49ers, to preview San Francisco’s Monday Night Football matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, share what it means to return to the booth amid his ongoing cancer treatment, and much more.

It will be a special day on Sunday, December 28th, when Papa returns to the radio booth for San Francisco’s Sunday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears. Papa will call the 49ers’ final two regular-season games.

Following treatment for a form of leukemia, Greg Papa tells Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross that his cancer is in remission and he’s elated to get back to what he loves most, calling games.

“They’ve opened my practice window. I’ve got some work to do,” Papa joked. “Right around Thanksgiving, I started to feel better… I said ‘I think that I can come back for the playoffs. I had this meeting on December 16th–five months to the day that I was diagnosed with leukemia–my blood work and my labs are all in the green now. I just feel like myself.”

“I feel like physically and mentally that I can do this.”

While Papa is set to return to the booth, he will continue to get treatment throughout the 49ers’ playoff run–but the veteran announcer is beyond excited to get back to work starting next weekend at Levi’s Stadium.

Greg Papa has been one of the most recognizable voices in Bay Area sports for decades. A veteran broadcaster, Papa has called NFL, NBA, college football, and college basketball games at both the local and national levels.

Papa spent more than 20 years as the radio voice of the Oakland Raiders before moving on to other roles across the region.

In 2019, Greg Papa became the radio play-by-play announcer for the San Francisco 49ers, pairing with Tim Ryan. Known for his command, pacing, and signature calls, Papa brings credibility, history, and polish to every broadcast.
