Kyle Shanahan coy on 49ers injuries, most players seen as day-to-day

Kyle Shanahan was tight-lipped Thursday when discussing the 49ers’ injury status entering Week 7, keeping diagnoses close to the chest.

The San Francisco 49ers head coach was mum on the subject of injuries to open the practice week, particularly when it came to their offensive stars. Running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, and left tackle Trent Williams all exited Week 6’s clash with the Cleveland Browns due to injuries. And while none of them are seen as long-term, all three players were held out of practice Thursday.

When asked about each player, Shanahan didn’t reveal much, only that if their game with the Minnesota Vikings was today, they wouldn’t be active. The coach did however reveal that McCaffrey’s MRI results were encouraging, stating that it is just an oblique injury, not a rib ailment as well.

“I thought it was,” Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday about CMC’s MRI. “Anyone who is day-to-day means they got a chance [to play].”

As for both Samuel (shoulder) and Williams (ankle), no further updates were provided. All three men are seen as day-to-day at this time.

Additionally, linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring) did not see the practice field Thursday. He missed Week 6 due to the injury sustained in practice last week. Left guard Aaron Banks also missed Thursday with an ankle injury.

Lastly, cornerback Isaiah Oliver was limited with a knee injury.

As for the players who were present Thursday, Brock Purdy is looking to have a bounce-back performance after Week 6’s disappointing loss. Throwing his first interception of the season, he and the offense just weren’t clicking in Cleveland.

But that didn’t seem to concern Shanahan much, with film study revealing the good and bad of the young QB’s performance.

“Brock missed a couple, so it wasn’t his best game. I still thought he made some real good plays too,” Kyle Shanahan said about Purdy. “It definitely wasn’t his best game, just because it was his first [regular-season] loss and his first pick of the year. Still, I thought there were a number of things he did really well in that game.”
