SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Raheem Morris breaks down 49ers’ challenge against the Raiders

49ers DC Raheem Morris discusses DeForest Buckner’s return, Kirk Cousins’ command of the Raiders’ offense and defending Brock Bowers.

The San Francisco 49ers return from their bye at 6-1 and will host the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.

The 4-4 Raiders have surged from a three-win 2025 season, setting up a matchup that will test San Francisco’s defense against quarterback Kirk Cousins and tight end Brock Bowers.

Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris knows Cousins well from their time together in Atlanta. He called the Raiders quarterback “one of the all-time progression quarterbacks that the league has seen,” praising his ability to process information and operate an offense.

Morris also pointed to Cousins’ late-game play in Las Vegas’ recent win over the Jets.

“He’s playing with a genuine enthusiasm that I’m used to seeing from him,” Morris said.

San Francisco’s defense could have important reinforcements of its own.

DeForest Buckner is back with the 49ers after the team acquired him from Indianapolis, and Morris said the defensive line could be at or near full strength for the first time this season.

Nick Bosa was trending in the right direction, though Morris stopped short of confirming he would play Sunday.

Buckner’s return could help the 49ers get more pressure without relying on extra rushers. Morris said Buckner and Osa Odighizuwa can line up at different spots across the defensive front, giving the defense flexibility to find combinations that suit their strengths.

“I’m a big believer in doing what people do really well,” Morris said. “We’ll try to find out what he does really well again, implement him to what the guys have been doing and put those guys together and put them out there playing fast.”

Morris also emphasized Buckner’s value in the locker room, saying the defensive tackle had made a strong impression in his first days back with the team. Brock Purdy echoed that, calling Buckner “a great teammate, great glue guy” and noting the stories he had heard about Buckner connecting players across the offense and defense.

The challenge will be containing Bowers, whom Morris described as a versatile matchup problem who can line up at tight end, receiver or in the backfield. “You don’t hold guys like that down without having some versatile pieces,” he said.

With Buckner back, Bosa potentially returning and cornerback Upton Stout feeling healthier, San Francisco has a chance to bring a more complete defense into the matchup.

The bye gave the 49ers time to recover; Sunday will show how much that added depth changes their ability to pressure Cousins and limit the Raiders’ playmakers.
