49ers feeling ‘ready’ with 2026 NFL Draft set to begin

With the NFL Draft approaching, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch detailed the team’s mindset, roster outlook, and preparation process, and touched on how their draft capital fits into the broader strategy.

The 49ers enter Thursday’s 2026 NFL Draft with a relatively limited number of selections, including their first-round pick at No. 27 overall.

Beyond that, Lynch acknowledged the team does not have an extensive pool of picks to work with, making flexibility and evaluation even more critical as they weigh potential trade opportunities and value on the board.

“Ready to go here in a few days and, per usual, really happy with our entire organization,” Lynch said. “I always mention it, but the thing I probably love most about the Draft is that it involves every ounce of our organization.”

As the NFL Draft nears, Lynch emphasized the importance of preparation and adaptability. “These next couple days… the hay’s never in the barn,” he said. “We’ll use every minute that we have to continue to really feel prepared, but we’re at a really good place.”

Even with limited draft capital, Lynch made clear the 49ers are not approaching the NFL Draft from a position of urgency. Instead, they are focused on flexibility and selecting impact players.

“You try to stay malleable there, such that you can do anything,” he said. “We have done our homework. We’ll be ready.”

The team’s offseason move to extend Trent Williams also plays into that stability heading into the NFL Draft, though Lynch said it does not dramatically change their approach. “Probably not a whole lot,” he said. “Trent’s been in our depth chart the whole time.”

Still, Lynch noted the value of having clarity at key positions as they evaluate options at No. 27 and beyond. “Signing a guy like Trent probably leaves you a little more comfortable in various scenarios,” he said, while also reiterating that roster needs remain part of the equation.

The 49ers’ approach to the NFL Draft will center on maximizing value rather than targeting specific holes.

“There are needs. Every roster has them,” Lynch said. “But I think what I liked about what we did in free agency this year is that there’s not a ton of needs.”

With pick No. 27 anchoring their class and limited additional selections, the 49ers will rely heavily on evaluation, collaboration, and potential movement throughout the draft weekend.

As Lynch put it, “We’ll be open to that,” referencing trade possibilities and roster-building flexibility heading into the NFL Draft.
