With the conclusion of the Super Bowl, the NFL offseason is now in full effect, with plenty of coaches, management, and other staffers considering changing organizations.
Over two weeks ago, the San Francisco 49ers announced the return of Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator, a role he filled from 2017-20 before accepting a role as the head coach of the New York Jets. Now, he’s back in the Bay Area.
Brandon Staley, 49ers assistant coach, drew notable consideration for that role, but they ultimately agreed with Saleh. Now, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, Staley is “a leading candidate to become Kellen Morre’s defensive coordinator in New Orleans.”

This came about an hour before the Saints officially announced their agreement with new head coach Moore after he won the Super Bowl as offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles.
As for the management and business side, Schefter also reported that 49ers director of scouting and football operations, Josh Williams, “will become the first candidate today to interview for the Jaguars GM job.”
Other known candidates for the Jacksonville opening include:
- Chicago Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham
- New York Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown
- Los Angeles Chargers assistant GM Chad Alexander
- Cincinnati Bengals Senior Personnel Executive Trey Brown
- Los Angeles Rams Director of Scouting James Gladstone
- Jacksonville Jaguars Assistant GM and Interim GM Ethan Waugh

Deebo Samuel told ESPN on Sunday that the San Francisco 49ers have granted the hybrid wide receiver and agent Tory Dandy permission to seek a trade.
Samuel’s comments came on the heels of the fomer All-Pro selection asking the 49ers to trade him during the players’ exit meetings after the season.
“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle (Shanahan, head coach) because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel said. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”
Samuel, 29, recorded 806 yards from scrimmage (670 receiving, 136 rushing) and four total touchdowns in 2024, his fewest in both categories since the 2020 campaign.
