It may have been unexpected, but the ending was inevitable: the 49ers and Trent Williams have agreed to a restructured deal.

Reports emerged early Tuesday morning that the San Francisco 49ers and Williams have agreed to a revised contract, putting the left tackle in place to return to practice in time for Monday’s season-opener against the New York Jets.

The 36-year-old’s agency, Elite Loyalty Sports, confirmed the news after a video released by Williams’ brother hinted that a deal had been reached.

Williams–who had three years remaining on his previous contract but with no guarantees remaining–will play his 14th NFL season in 2024, including his fifth in a 49ers uniform.

Details on Williams’ new deal are currently unclear, but San Francisco fans can now exhale with Brandon Aiyuk and Williams ending their contract disputes with the organization over the holiday weekend.

More on 49ers LT Trent Williams

Trent Williams, 36, had three years remaining on his previous deal. But, there was no guaranteed money remaining, hence the exclusion from training camp. The Texas native would earn a base salary of $20.05 million in 2024, holding a $10.756 million cap hit for the 49ers.

Despite the lucrative number, Williams wanted more guarantees, and the potential to push that number even higher in the short-term. Detroit Lions’ right tackle Penei Sewell inked a $27-million-annually extension, while Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ LT Tristian Wirfs signed a 5-year, $140.63 million deal to make him the highest-paid OL in NFL history. After those deals became official, it wasn’t a surprise that Trent Williams would seek market value, still at the top of his game entering Year 14.

And he got his wish, now one of the highest-paid players on the 49ers, and in the NFL entirely.
