Only 38 days post-UCL surgery, quarterback Brock Purdy is set to rejoin the San Francisco 49ers Monday.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that Purdy would be returning to Santa Clara for the start of the team’s offseason program. The gunslinger will not be partaking in any on-field drills however, only attending meetings and rehabilitation as he nurses his elbow injury.

Purdy underwent a repair of his right elbow in early March, expected to have a six-month layoff before he can begin a throwing program. Despite the unfortunate events, the 23-year-old Arizona native is at peace with the setback, taking it one step at a time.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time, trying to get healthy and trying to be the best version I can be every single day and go from there,” Brock Purdy told ESPN. “Overall, I’m taking it one day at a time and everything will fall into place.”

An injury typically reserved for baseball pitchers, Purdy is among one of the few QBs to have UCL surgery. Because of this, he knows the path back to the field will have its’ challenges. But thanks to a successful surgery by Texas Rangers’ team physician Dr. Keith Meister, Purdy is confident that his patience will pay off.

“It’s a process for sure,” Purdy told ProFootballTalk. “It doesn’t matter what you hurt. If you have surgery on something, you’ve just got to let it have time to heal initially and then go from there. For me, it’s slowly getting better a little bit every single day. Everything is going as planned. We’re on the same page just in terms of the Niners, [Dr. Keith] Meister and my physical therapist out here. Everyone’s on the same page, and everything’s going as planned. Very thankful for that. Just staying one day at a time from here.”

Brock Purdy has also spoken to fellow athletes that have undergone major elbow surgery in the past, including a former 49ers QB.

“I talked to Nick Mullens as well,” Purdy stated. “He went through this a couple of years ago. He had the same surgery. He had some great advice as well. It’s definitely something that I’ve talked about with some other guys and have gotten some great advice from.”

Purdy has made solid strides in his recovery thus far, no longer wearing a brace on his right elbow. He is also working with coaches and PTs on range of motion for the elbow, continuing that when he rejoins the 49ers Monday. Looking to start a throwing program on June 10th (three months post-op), Purdy would like to return as soon as possible, but he’s at ease with taking his time in the recovery process.

“Yeah, I think it was great news,” Purdy said. “Obviously, you look at the recovery time of that one versus the reconstruction. But it’s all God’s plan, and I trust that everything happens for a reason. So for it to be the repair with the internal brace was great news, and now we’re just taking it one day at a time.”

Also returning to Santa Clara Monday is QB Trey Lance.

Lance has been recovering from a fractured right ankle suffered Week 2 of last season. Only featuring in eight contests in two seasons, the former first-round pick is eager to get back to the Bay Area pronto, and his counterpart feels the same way.

“We’re [Trey Lance & Brock Purdy] all excited to get back together in California and start learning the playbook together and helping each other out,” Purdy told The Athletic. “We obviously want what’s best for each other. We’re in a lot of contact, texting each other all the time. It’s been great.”

While Lance will be the healthiest of the two going into the 2023 season, the team’s preference may have already been decided, leaving the predecessor a bit antsy to make the most of this moment.

The 49ers begin their three-phase offseason program Monday, April 17th. Players can report to the team facility for workouts and team meetings. OTAs are scheduled for late May & early June.
