With the 2023 NFL regular season schedule set to be released later this week, it looks like the San Francisco 49ers will not be playing across the pond this season.

Reports surfaced Monday morning the 49ers are unlikely to play a game overseas next season. The 2023 Intentional Series includes games in England, Germany and Mexico City, Mexico.

San Francisco will face the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in 2023. The Jags have been a regular feature in intentional games, particularly at Wembley Stadium in London, England. That made the Red & Gold a prime contender for said game. But due to the team’s extensive road schedule next season, they are now seen as an outsider for the contest.

The news was reported by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco and The Athletic’s Matt Barrows Monday.

“The 49ers already have a taxing non-division road schedule with games at Philadelphia, Washington, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Jacksonville, so a London game this season is thought to be highly unlikely,” Maiocco said via Twitter Monday.

Here is a list of the Red & Gold’s opponents in 2023:

Home

Arizona Cardinals
Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals
Dallas Cowboys
Los Angeles Rams

The 49ers played in the international series last season, defeating the “home team” Arizona Cardinals, 38-10, Week 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Since the inaugural London game in 2007, San Francisco has featured in three international games.

The 2023 NFL schedule is expected to be released Thursday, May 11th.
