Reports: 49ers Christian McCaffrey to attend mandatory minicamp

While the summer may only be beginning, things are heating up in the NFL’s offseason programs. That includes the 49ers, expected to have Christian McCaffrey back in the fold.

Reported surfaced Tuesday morning that the San Francisco 49ers star running back would be attending the team’s mandatory minicamp this week. McCaffrey had previously missed OTAs last month due to undisclosed reasons.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch was first with the news. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco confirmed thereafter.

Christian McCaffrey, 27, wasn’t the only player absent from OTAs this offseason. Veterans and injured players alike have opted out of those programs in years past. What made CMC’s absence so surprising is his usual punctuality and professionalism in the football realm.

The Colorado native was on hand for most of the 49ers 2023 offseason program, including OTAs. Coming in at the trade deadline of 2022, McCaffrey used last offseason to propel himself forward in coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.The veteran is accustom to the playbook now however, giving causality as his absence.

Other factors contributing could be on a personal level.

McCaffrey has spent much of the offseason preparing for his star-studded wedding with model and philanthropist Olivia Culpo later this summer. The couple enjoyed the latter’s bridal shower in recent weeks, with less than a month until the occasion.

Another factor could be his contract, with only two years remaining on the deal. After earning offensive player of the year last season, McCaffrey may feel inclined to ask for a new deal. Currently sitting at $16 million in 2024, CMC is already the team’s fifth-highest-paid offensive player

Those notions will be put on the back burner for now however, with the star player back in Santa Clara wont th 49ers.
