Reports: 49ers sign K Matthew Wright as Jake Moody holdover

Two days after losing their kicker, the 49ers have found their replacement is Matthew Wright.

Reports emerged Tuesday morning that San Francisco 49ers  would be signing the veteran kicker in place of Jake Moody. Wright worked out for the Red & Gold Monday along with five other candidates. That includes Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson and Matt Coghlin.

In the end, the Pennsylvania native gets the nod, making his 49ers debut Thursday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Matthew Wright, 28, is now entering his fifth season in the NFL. He has played for an assortment of teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs. The University of Central Florida alum last played for one contest for the Carolina Panthers in 2023.  He also spent time on the 49ers’ practice squad in August of last season while Moody dealt with a quad injury.

Wright is 40/47 on field goals, and 35/37 on extra points in his NFL career.

49ers’ former third-round pick Jake Moody suffered a high-ankle sprain Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. His foot rolled up under him while attempting to tackle a Cardinals’ kick returner in the second quarter. He walked gingerly to the sideline before being carted to the locker room altogether.

It is unknown at this time how long Moody will be out of action.
