The 49ers have plenty of weapons on the offensive side of the football; Why not one more in Frank Darby for 2024.
Reports emerged Saturday morning that the San Francisco 49ers have signed the former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver to a one-year deal. Further details have not been provided at this time. The move gives SF another pass-catcher for training camp, already signed fellow WR Malik Turner earlier in the week.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news Saturday. The team announced the news later in the morning, waiving cornerback Kemon Hall to make room.

Frank Darby, 26, was a sixth round pick by the Falcons back in 2021. An acclaimed prospect from Arizona State University, the New Jersey native has struggled to see consistent playing time in the NFL. He only has two catches for 29 receiving yards in three seasons. Darby was cut by Atlanta during the 2023 preseason, before re-signing with the team to featured in one game last season.
His move to the 49ers looks to give him a fresh start with some familiar faces. Darby played with 49ers WRs Ricky Pearsall and Brandon Aiyuk at ASU in 2019, combining for one of the most prolific passing attacks in the PAC-12.
While there’s no guarantee he’ll make the 53-man roster in SF, the addition of another physical wideout is a shrewd move for the organization in dire need of more bodies at the position. Both Aiyuk and Pearsall are not practicing at the moment (different reasons for each), while fellow WRs Jacob Cowing and Tay Martin did not practice on Friday.
