Breaking the rules a bit, the 49ers have drafted kicker Jake Moody in the third round Friday.

The San Francisco 49ers used their second of three third-round selections to take Moody, the N0.1-ranked kicker in the 2023 draft class. Moody is the first placekicker sleeted in the first three rounds of an NFL Draft since Roberto Aguayo in 2016.

Now joining a high-profile NFL franchise, the spotlight is once again on the former Big 12 kicker.

Nicknamed “Money Moody”, he was one of the best kickers in college football the last two years, scoring 272 points in that timespan. He was also perfect from PATs, hitting 148 in his collegiate career. Moody’s one blemish was field goal percentage in his final season, hitting only 29 of 35 field goal attempts.

That’s 82.9%, not amazing. The previous season: 92%.

Regardless, Moody will be tasked with carrying the torch from former 49er Robbie Gould, someone Jake is all too familiar with.

I’m so fired up,” Jake Moody said at his introductory press conference Friday. “I’ve built a pretty good relationship with Robbie Gould, actually, this past few months. And he’s been telling me how great it is. And he actually just texted me a few minutes ago, saying how excited he is for me and telling me how great of a place it is.”
