The San Francisco 49ers have named eight team captains for the 2024 season, an increase of two members from the previous year.

The 49ers have undergone some big changes ahead of the 2024 season, including a few more team captains.

The San Francisco 49ers announced eight players will wear the “captain” symbol on their jerseys this season. Those include long-time members such as Fred Warner, Trent Williams and George Kittle, and new additions like Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk and Christian McCaffrey. Brock Purdy and Deebo Samuel also make their sophomore appearance as team captains.

In total, the 49ers named eight superstars as team captains, an increase from six a year ago.

“Well, you’re allowed nine,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said about the captains’ list this week. “I try to do it right with the votes. I think we’ve always had six or seven. The seven and eight were like one vote off and the ninth guy was like eight behind them. So it was really obvious who those eight were and the ninth one was too far from it. I’d rather not have so many. But I’m not going to pick when the team votes it that close.”

The Red & Gold enter the 2024 season coming off of another heartbreaking Super Bowl defeat six months earlier. Because of that, changes appeared to be necessary. The departure of long-standing captain Arik Armstead signaled such. Nick Bosa now partially takes the mantle of defensive leader from Armstead, captaining one of the best units in the NFL alongside Fred Warner.

And while the former defensive player of the year is honored to be bestowed with the captain’s patch, he’s seems a bit more executed about the perks that come with it.

“I heard we get a parking spot,” Bosa said jokingly about being named a 49ers’ team captain this week.
