The San Francisco 49ers have added speedy edge rusher to end their round-five selections.
The 49ers selected Georgia defensive end Robert Beal Jr. with the 173rd overall pick Saturday. Beal was a part of the Bulldogs’ stout defensive line the last few seasons, winning back-to-back national championships.
A rotational player in college, he will be tasked with learning the NFL game alongside defensive player of the year Nick Bosa, making the Bay Area a great situation for him.

Robert Beal, 23, was at Georgia for six years, featuring in. 37 games for the Bulldogs. He skipped the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Beal finished his collegiate career with 72 total tackles, 10 sacks and 11 TFLs.
Despite growing up in Georgia, Beal’s favorite team growing up was the 49ers, seeing comparisons in his game to former 49ers’ pass rusher Aldon Smith.
“It’s crazy because the 49ers were like my favorite team growing up as a kid,” Beal said at his introductory press conference Saturday. “This is like a dream come true, being able to reunite and come play for you guys.”
Now joining the 49ers, defensive line coach Kris Kocurek will have another elite prospect to mold for the next few years.
These measurables for Robert Beal Jr. are very notable in that such twitch + arm length — especially from a power program (Georgia) — rarely falls to late in the fifth round.
