San Francisco 49ers select LB Dee Winters in sixth round

To close out the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the 49ers have added some serious speed at the linebacker position.

The San Francisco 49ers have drafted TCU linebacker Dee Winters with the 216th overall pick Saturday. Winters was a First Team All Big 12 player for the Horned Frogs, helping them reach the National Championship game last season.

Now joining a perennial playoff contender in the Red & Gold, he’ll be tasked with bringing his explosive play style to the Bay Area.

Dee Winters, 22, played four seasons in Texas, featuring in 45 college games in the Big 12. A defensive captain, he racked up 246 total tackles, 12.5 sacks and 33.5 TFLs. He tested well at the NFL Scouting Combine, recording a 4.49 40-yard dash with a 1.56 10-yard split. Hi one blemish is his physical traits, undersized at 5’11”, 227 pounds.

Despite being undersized for the position, Winters has a nose for the ball, both in pass coverage and rushing the quarterback. Now joining a team that utilizes the blitz, he hopes to continue building his game in the 49ers play-style.

“I’ve been watching for Fred Warner for about two years now, ever since I transitioned from safety to linebacker,” Winters said at his introductory press conference Saturday. “I think Fred Warner is probably one of the top linebackers in the league and that’s definitely somebody I look up to.”
