The San Francisco 49ers began preparations for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with several key players sidelined, including wide receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan also said defensive end Nick Bosa could not practice Wednesday, though he hopes Bosa will return to the field Thursday.

Evans is dealing with Achilles tendonitis, which forced him out of Monday’s win over Washington. Asked whether the receiver might need to manage the issue throughout the season, Shanahan said the team is taking it week by week.

“We had to manage it last week, and we’re managing it this week,” Shanahan said. “So, we’ll see how the rest of the year goes.”

Shanahan did not say whether Evans would be available against Atlanta. The 49ers are also monitoring Samuel, who has a hamstring injury, and several other players who missed practice, including linebacker Garret Wallow, safety Marques Sigle, linebacker Luke Gifford, defensive back Siran Neal, cornerback Upton Stout and defensive lineman Mykel Williams.

Bosa, who is dealing with a calf injury, was another notable absence. Shanahan said the defensive end could not practice Wednesday but added, “hoping he’ll be out there tomorrow.”

The 49ers will need their defense ready for a major challenge in Atlanta. Shanahan called Falcons running back Bijan Robinson dangerous as both a runner and receiver, saying he presents “a huge challenge for our linebackers” and the entire defense.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was expected to practice Wednesday, giving San Francisco a potential boost as it prepares for Robinson.

Shanahan also praised the team’s pass rush and coverage after reviewing Monday’s game film. He said the defensive front has been effective as a unit, creating one-on-one opportunities and playing with relentless effort.

“I think our coverage has been tied to it very well, also,” Shanahan said.

On offense, Shanahan said the second-half struggles against Washington were not simply a result of Evans’ absence. He pointed to two sacks that put the 49ers in third-and-long situations and led to consecutive three-and-outs.

The 49ers will have a short week before traveling to Atlanta, with the bye week following Sunday’s game. Shanahan said Christian Kirk, who is working his way back, had a good week of practice and would be back on the field Wednesday.

The coach said he hopes Kirk feels good by the end of the week.

With Evans and Bosa’s status still uncertain, San Francisco’s practice reports will be worth watching as the 49ers prepare for a difficult road matchup.
