The injury occurred in the closing minutes of the contest when Samuel was targeted on a slant pass in the redzone. Upon catching it, the wideout was dragged to the ground by cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., twisting his lower body. The 49ers’ star limped off the field thereafter, grimacing as he took a knee on the sideline. Samuel returned to the lineup a play later, but was in noticeable discomfort.
The injury was not initially reported after the game, but was treated by the team’s medical staff and determined to be worse than just soreness.
Shanahan did not provide further details on Samuel’s injury, nor on what the team will do to replace him in the meantime. The 49ers have one roster spot open after putting McCaffrey on IR Saturday.
Deebo Samuel, 28, is in Year 7 in the NFL, drafted by the 49ers in 2019. The star playmaker has amassed over 5,000 scrummage yards and 39 total touchdowns, becoming one of the premier players in the league. Samuel was off to a terrific start in 2024, hauling in eight catches for 110 receiving yards in Week 2.
