Shanahan: No injury update for 49ers S Talanoa Hufanga at this time

Sunday at the office didn’t go to plan for Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers, now down Talanoa Hufanga for an undermined time.

The San Francisco 49ers coach provided no update on the former All-Pro safety during Monday’s conference call with the media, only reiterating that Hufanga indeed has a serious wrist injury. The Oregon native suffered the ailment during the second quarter of Week 5’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Hufanga was taken off the field after allowing a broken tackle as the visitors marched into the redzone. He would not return in the second half.

While further tests need to be determined at this time, the hope is that the veteran safety can return at some point during the regular season. For now, rookie Malik Mustapha, Ji’Ayir Brown and George Odum will pick up the slack for Talanoa Hufanga.

In other injury news, the 49ers won’t activate rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall ahead of Week 6. The 2024 first-round pick is eleibale to return from injured reserve, but will not be activate as the team has a short week ahead of them. Pearsall has been recovering from a gunshot wound suffered prior to the regular season, and is seemingly on track to make his NFL debut in the coming weeks.

Shanahan also revealed that the 49ers are bringing in four kickers for tryouts Monday as they look for Jake Moody’s replacement. The second-year sensation suffered a high ankle sprain during the second quarter of Week 5 after attempting to tackle a Cardinals’ kick returner.

Additionally, star running back Christian McCaffrey will continue his ramp-up process this week. 

CMC has been nursing bilateral achilles tendinitis since Week 1, going overseas to seek further treatment. While he returned from his trip with mild optimism, there is no timeline for his return to NFL action at this time. Both Shanahan and the 49ers are using extreme caution with their star ballcarrier.

Lastly, Shanahan revealed that 49ers defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos had knee surgery last Friday. He is expected to be sidelined for four to eight weeks after landing on the IR over the weekend.
