Lynch: 49ers are ‘Really Excited’ About Trent Williams Deal

The San Francisco 49ers locked in a major piece of their future just days before the NFL Draft, as general manager John Lynch confirmed a new deal for Trent Williams.

Speaking to reporters, Lynch didn’t hesitate when asked about the agreement, one that was reported by Williams’ representation, Elite Loyalty Sports.

“Yes, I can confirm that, and we’re really excited about that,” he said. “Trent’s a phenomenal player.”

The deal, reportedly a two-year, $50 million extension, ensures that Trent Williams remains the anchor of San Francisco’s offensive line as the team continues its push for a championship.

Lynch reflected on the origins of the relationship, noting how long the organization has valued the All-Pro tackle.

“I remember being on the phone during the COVID days, and that’s where that thing came together and was thrilled then, we still remain thrilled and really happy to have that behind us and Trent in the fold,” he said.

Beyond production on the field, Lynch emphasized Trent Williams’ significance to the culture inside the building.

“There’s a buzz in the building because of what Trent means to this place. So, we’re very excited,” Lynch said.

He even shared a long-term vision for Williams’ legacy: “As I told Trent when we started this thing, my hope is that his name, his number, are up in those rafters with a lot of great players that have played here.”

From a roster-building standpoint, securing Trent Williams doesn’t drastically alter the 49ers’ draft approach—but it does provide stability.

“Probably not a whole lot,” Lynch said when asked about the impact on draft strategy. “Signing a guy like Trent probably leaves you a little more comfortable in various scenarios.”

He added that the team always believed a deal would get done, saying, “Trent’s been in our depth chart the whole time. We had a great deal of confidence that we’d get this done.”

Even at 37, with his 38th birthday approaching, the 49ers remain confident in Trent Williams’ longevity.

“We did a two-year deal with Trent with great confidence that Trent’s going to be here for a couple years,” Lynch said. “The way he takes care of himself, where his heart’s at, I have a high degree of confidence that Trent can and will do that for us.”

Still, Lynch acknowledged the reality of planning ahead at a premium position. “But absolutely, you have to be looking for whoever… that is a premium position, and we understand the end is closer than it has been,” he said.
