With Super Bowl LIX now in the rearview, the NFL offseason has arrived.

Teams like the San Francisco 49ers will be looking to make a series of moves that will bring itself back into the thick of contention, and it all starts this month as NFL teams will flock to Indianapolis for the 2025 NFL Combine.

Here’s a look at some key upcoming NFL offseason dates to watch for as we look ahead to a new league year.

2025 NFL Offseason Dates of Interest

Feb. 24-March 3: NFL Combine (Indianapolis)

One of the biggest events leading up to the NFL draft, held once again at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. San Francisco’s staff will scout and interview some of the top prospects from this year’s draft class at the combine.

March 4: College pro days begin

The 49ers will have staff members at dozens of pro days this spring to scout prospects from colleges both big and small.

March 4: Deadline to use franchise tag

San Francisco could opt to use a franchise tag on LB Dre Greenlaw, QB Brock Purdy, WR Brandon Aiyuk or others, but it’s considered highly unlikely.

March 10-12: Free agency negotiating window

Clubs can begin negotiating contracts with pending free agent players from other teams beginning March 10, but no deals can become official until the NFL’s new league year begins on March 12.

March 12: NFL free agency and trading period begins

Once the new league year begins on March 12, clubs can sign free agents from other teams and complete trades with other teams.

April 21: NFL Offseason workouts begin

Clubs with a returning head coach (including the Broncos) can begin their offseason program on April 21.

April 24-26: 2025 NFL draft (Green Bay)

Here are the 49ers’ 2025 NFL Draft selections:

  • Round 1, No. 11 overall
  • Round 2, No. 43 overall
  • Round 3, No. 75 overall
  • Round 3 (compensatory)
  • Round 4
  • Round 6
  • Round 7 (from Panthers)

May 2-5 or May 9-12: Rookie minicamps

After the NFL Draft, clubs will be permitted to hold a rookie minicamp between either May 2-5 or May 9-12.

May: 2025 NFL scheduled announced

Over the last five years, the NFL has announced its upcoming schedule between May 7-15. Assuming that trend will continue, fans can expect the 49ers’ schedule to be announced around the first or second week of May.

May-June: OTAs and mandatory minicamp

Last year, organized team activities started in late May and wrapped up in early June.

July 15: Extension deadline for franchise-tagged players

Players who receive a franchise tag in the spring have until July 15 to sign a long-term extension with their club. If an extension is not reached before that summer deadline, the player will be locked into a one-year deal for the 2025 season on the franchise tag.

July: Training camp expected to begin

The 49ers typically begin training camp practices in late July, and most practices are open to the public.

August: Preseason and roster cuts

September: Regular season begins

Aaron Rodgers headlines the list of veteran quarterbacks expected to be on the move this offseason, and several potential landing spots have emerged as the favorite next NFL destination for the four-time MVP.

With the New York Jets reportedly telling the 41-year-old that he won’t be returning next year, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been installed as the +200 favorite by DraftKings to sign Rodgers. The Steelers are reportedly ready to move on from Russell Wilson, with Justin Fields considered more likely to return to Pittsburgh.

The second-shortest odds belong to Las Vegas at +300. The Raiders used journeyman Gardner Minshew and second-year quarterback Aidan O’Connell last year. New coach Pete Carroll is expected to seek a veteran signal-caller, and the Raiders have been the most popular choice with the public, backing Las Vegas with 25 percent of the money wagered on Rodgers’ next team.

While Aaron Rodgers is expected to play at least one more season, the Raiders wouldn’t appear to provide an opportunity to compete for the postseason immediately in the deep AFC West.

The second-most popular choice with the public has been San Francisco, with the 49ers backed by 15 percent of the money to sign Rodgers. 49ers owner Jed York and general manager John Lynch have both stated their intention to sign Brock Purdy to a long-term contract this offseason. But Rodgers also has strong ties to Northern California, where he starred for Cal after growing up in Chico.
