On Sunday, the NHL issued a $5,000 fine against Joe Thornton for slashing.

According to USA Today, the San Jose Sharks center slashed Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson in the second period of Saturday night’s game.

Under NHL rules, this is the maximum monetary fine Thornton could have gotten. The money goes to the players’ emergency assistance fund.

The Lightning ended up winning the game in Tampa 5-2.
