While A’s fans may not know where the team will play in 2025, they at least now know who will be the team’s manager. The Oakland Athletics announced they’ve exercised the team’s option for manager Mark Kotsay for the 2025 season.
The 47-year-old manager joined the organization on Dec. 21, 2021. However, things haven’t been easy since he joined the club. The A’s finished last season with a record of 50-112, the franchise’s worst losing record in the Oakland era. When the 2023 season ended, it was the first time since the team moved to Oakland that the A’s posted consecutive 100-loss seasons.
“Mark’s leadership, character, and integrity have been a hallmark of his time with the A’s; first as a player and a coach, and, for the last two years, as our manager,” General Manager David Forst said in a press release. “Picking up his option was an obvious decision to make for our club, and I look forward to having him lead the A’s on the field through 2025 and hopefully beyond.”
Mark Kotsay almost didn’t make it to the 2024 season. SNY’s Andy Martino reported earlier this month that the A’s manager was in the mix to become the next New York Mets manager.
Oakland manager Mark Kotsay has also been in the mix for Mets manager. It's unclear if he's one of the 3 or so getting in-person interviews. That is Mendoza, Counsell and maybe 1 or 2 more at most. The process is getting there.

Before becoming the Oakland Athletics manager, he served as the team’s bench coach from 2016-17, quality control coach from 2018-20 and third base coach in 2021.
With a manager in place, the organization will next have to find a place to play. The A’s lease at the Oakland Coliseum expires following the conclusion of the 2024 season.
