Only one baseball player from the Bay Area is a finalist for MLB’s Gold Glove Award, Oakland A’s catcher Sean Murphy.
Finalists were announced Thursday. Winners will be announced during a one-hour, special edition of ESPN‘s Baseball Tonight on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The award show leads into Game 4 of the World Series.
In its press release announcing the finalist, MLB explained how the process works.
To determine the winners at the nine standard positions, the 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team vote from a pool of players in their league, excluding players from their own team. These votes comprise 75% of the selection total, with the SABR Defensive Index counting for the other 25%.
The Gold Glove is awarded to the game’s best defenders, something Murphy is familiar with. In 2021, he took home the award for the first time. Murphy is the only catcher in Oakland A’s team history to win the Gold Glove.
