There may not be much to root for in Oakland these days, but Brent Rooker is giving A’s fans a spark whenever he can.
On Monday, Major League Baseball announced Rooker has been named the American League Player of the Week. Nick Senzel of the Cincinnati Reds was named the National League Player of the Week.
In a week full of games, the 29-year-old outfielder scored eight runs on five home runs and a double, hitting .417 while driving in 11 runs. With six walks and two hit-by-pitches, his on-base percentage was a whopping .545 against the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds.
“Rooker began the week with his second two-homer game of the season and his career on Monday against the Angels when he hit back-to-back home runs with Jesús Aguilar twice in the same game,” the Oakland A’s said in a press release. “He reached base safely five times on Friday against the Reds when he went 3-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch, home run and two RBI. Overall, he ranks fifth in the majors in home runs (9) and tied for 10th in RBI (22).”
Throughout all of April, Brent Rooker hit .358 with nine home runs, two shy of the record set in 1997 by former Athletic Mark McGwire.

According to the team, Rooker is the first A’s player to be awarded the American League Player of the Week since pitcher Frankie Montas in August 2020. Rooker is the first non-pitcher to be named player of the week since Mark Canha in August 2019.
