The Oakland A’s announced Monday that they’ve placed outfielder Seth Brown on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique.
Taking his place, the A’s have called up infielder Kevin Smith from the Las Vegas Aviators, the team’s Triple-A affiliate.
In his fifth season with Oakland, Brown started eight of the team’s nine games, recording a .200 batting average with one home run and two RBIs.
The A’s note Smith underwent testing Monday to “determine the severity of the strain.” Last season, the 30-year-old outfielder hit 25 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 115 hits, all career highs.

In the team’s announcement, the A’s say Smith has gone 9-for-30 (.300) with five home runs and 12 RBI in seven games for Las Vegas, all starts at shortstop.
“He ranks second in the Pacific Coast League in stolen bases (4), third in home runs, fourth in RBI, sixth in slugging percentage (.833) and tied for sixth in runs scored (9) and extra base hits (6),” the team’s announcements says. “The 26-year-old right-handed hitter went 4-for-6 with three home runs and seven RBI on April 2 at Reno. Smith hit .180 with two home runs, 13 RBI and a .518 OPS in 47 games with the A’s last year.”
