Oakland Athletics’ rookie Esteury Ruiz is in the franchise’s record books.
Ruiz stole second in the top of the first inning of the team’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, July 5. This was his 43rd steal on the season.
This is significant because he broke a 46-year-old record that was previously set by Mitchell Page in 1977. Ruiz tied Page’s record in the second game of the A’s weekend series against the Chicago White Sox.

Through 85 games, Ruiz is hitting .257 with an OBP of .310, leading the team in doubles (19), at-bats (332), and hits (85).
Last month, MLB tweeted that Ruiz is on pace to steal 80 bases this season, something that hasn’t been done in 35 years. And even if he’s able to hit or surpass 80 stolen bases, it’s unlikely he breaks the A’s franchise record of 130 which was set by Rickey Henderson in 1982.
Will Esteury Ruiz continue to set records and make history this season?
