The 2020 Olympics just came to an end on August 8, 2021.
Yes, that is the current state of our world.
I have always loved the Olympics and will continue to do so. I realize that I am the eternal optimist, but I do believe that it brings out the best in all of us.
Take these games for example.
There was plenty of debate as to whether or not the games should have even happened. The host country didn’t want the games to go on. Gathering a large amount of people from different countries together during a world wide pandemic didn’t sound like the best of ideas. The games did go on. Medals were awarded in every single sport.
Memories were made. We came together to watch, support and see the best of sport. In many ways, this is what we can do best as people, is find a way.
I loved the spirit of these games. The athletes have spent countless hours chasing dreams and, in the end, those were achieved or they fell short. I saw incredible competitive drive but also a sense of humanity among the competitors that showed compassion.
Tears were shed, smiles were worn, records were broken, while the support systems were back home watching at virtual parties. This was an Olympics unlike any we have ever seen but that is because we are in a time that none of us have ever been a part of.
We made it through it. We adapted, we pushed forward, and we showed what can be done when people galvanize with one goal. Our world is filled with doubters, armchair quarterbacks and quite frankly, far too much negativity.
The Olympics aren’t perfect, but neither is this world.
With the Olympics, we are asking to bring out the best in the athletes. Now it is our time to bring out the best in the rest of us.
