It was the lowest scoring Super Bowl in NFL but it was enough for the New England Patriots to clinch their sixth Super Bowl championship in franchise history and sixth in the past 17 years.

The game featured just one touchdown between the two teams which was a two-yard touchdown run by Sony Michel with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The rest of the scoring came from a field goal from Greg Zuerlein and two from Stephen Gostkowski, including one with 1:12 remaining in the game to clinch the game 13-3.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was named Super Bowl MVP after catching ten passes for 141 total yards on 12 targets. Edelman becomes the seventh wide receiver to win Super Bowl MVP and the first since Santonio Holmes won it in Super Bowl XLIII. He joins Tom Brady and Deion Branch as Patriots to win the honor.

The Rams and Patriots combined to set a few different Super Bowl records. No other Super Bowl had gone the first three quarters without a touchdown but this one did, as both teams were tied at three after 45 minutes. Los Angeles became the first team in Super Bowl history to punt on their first eight drives of the game. The three points scored by the Rams was the fewest in a game in the Sean McVay era and just the fourth time the Rams gained less than 300 total yards under McVay.

The Patriots scored the lone touchdown of the game on the two-yard run by Michel that ended a five-play, 69-yard drive that saw Rob Gronkowski catch two passes for 47 yards to give New England a 10-3 lead with seven minutes remaining. The Rams responded with their longest drive of the game in terms of yards but ended with a Stephon Gilmore interception at the four-yard line on a pass that was under thrown by Jared Goff.

New England then took 3:05 off the clock following the interception on a nine-play, 72-yard drive that resulted in Gostkowski’s second field goal of the game and put the game away.

Notes

  • The win puts the Patriots in a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl championships by a franchise with six.
  • Head coach Bill Belichick became the oldest winning Super Bowl coach at age 66.
  • The 10-point victory is the largest winning margin in any of the six Patriots Super Bowl wins
  • Tom Brady passed Charles Haley to become the only play with six Super Bowl titles
  • This was also the first Super Bowl appearance from Brady where he did not throw for a single touchdown pass
  • Before tonight, the lowest-scoring Super Bowl was Super Bowl VII between Miami and Washington, which combined for 21 points
  • Super Bowl LIII was also the lowest scoring first half since Super Bowl IX, when the Steelers and Vikings combined for two points
