After Josh McDaniels was hired to coach the Las Vegas Raiders, he hired his own coordinators.
Joining McDaniels on the sidelines are former Patriots quarterbacks coach, Mick Lombardi as the team’s new offensive coordinator, and former New York Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. He takes on the same role in Vegas.
The two will get their first shot at regular season play with the Silver and Black this weekend as they take on the Los Angeles Chargers. Graham said when scheming, it’s all about finding the patterns of coaches.
“You’ve got to study that stuff and you have to be prepared for it,” Graham told the media. “Especially game one, you have to be prepared for everything.”
When it comes to containing a quarterback like Justin Herbert, Graham said there will be dynamic plays that are planned and plays that aren’t. Leading up to the game, he’s emphasized to his player to stay focused.
“So really the emphasis remains the same, defend the deep part of the field and the role the defensive backs have on that and also the pass rushers, they have a job with that too,” Graham said. “You let him out of the pocket, now that’s extra time to go down the field. Everybody has a role. That’s the unique thing about defense in my opinion. There’s a lot of grass behind us and we have to find a way to defend it, and everybody has a role, whether it’s in the run, the pass.”
