The San Francisco 49ers needed to retain some depth on the defensive line this offseason, doing so with defensive tackle T.Y. McGill Thursday.
Reports surfaced that the 49ers would be bringing McGill back on a one-year deal Thursday. The specifics of the contract have not been released at this time, only noting that there will be guaranteed money on the base salary.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first with the news.
The 49ers needed at least a little more depth among their DTs, so they bring back T.Y. McGill who generated some decent rotational pass rushing for them in 2022.

McGill, 30, joined the 49ers in the middle of the 2022 season as depth for the practice squad. Impressing Kyle Shanahan and the coaching staff, the journeyman DT appeared in nine regular-season games for San Francisco. he finished 2022 with eight combined tackles, two TFLs and two QB hits. While his numbers are modest indeed, McGill’s presence alone made the Red & Gold’s rotation that much better.
T.Y. McGill is the second defensive lineman to re-sign with the 49ers this offseason, with Kevin Givens inking a two-year extension earlier in the week. Also signing DT Javon Hargrave to a massive deal, the 49ers may have its’ defensive interior set for 2023.

San Francisco also announced the re-signing of linebacker Demetrius Flannagan-Fowles Thursday, reaching a one-year extension with the special-teamer. After losing fellow LB Azeez Al-Shaair in free agency, Flannagan-Fowles could step in to the sub-linebacker role next season.
