On the first day of 2023 free agency, the 49ers make a huge splash on the defensive line.

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly reached an agreement with former Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive tackle Javon Hargrave Monday. One of the top free agents on the market, the 49ers & Hargrave come to terms on a 4-year, $84 million deal with $40 million guaranteed at signing.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the news.

The 49ers were a real playoff contender in 2022, making it to the NFC Championship with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy. After Purdy got hurt in the contest, San Francisco crumbled, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-7. Getting beaten in the interior all game, San Francisco now addressed their biggest weakness with the No. 1 free agent at DT in Hargrave.

Now having a defensive line of Javon Hargrave, Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead, San Francisco makes it clear that they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in 2023.

Javon Hargrave, 30, was an unstoppable force last season, recording a career-high 11 sacks in 2022. He also registered 60 combined tackles, 16 QB hits and 10 TFLs. While the deal will likely mean some restructuring with other players, the 49ers are loading up on one of their areas of weakness.
