Gabe Kapler may not be unemployed for long.
The former San Francisco Giants manager has reportedly interviewed with the Boston Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported. But not for the team’s manager.
Earlier this month, Alex Cora told reporters that Red Sox ownership “assured him he’ll return next season.” Kapler reportedly interviewed for the team’s new head of baseball operations. Boston let go of former president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom this past September.
Kapler was let go by the Giants before the 2023 season concluded. The former Giants’ manager was named National League Manager of the Year in 2021 after leading San Francisco to a franchise-record 107 wins, but back-to-back seasons without a postseason berth spelled the end of the line.
Hired before the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Gabe Kapler compiled a record of 295-248 (.543) during his four seasons with San Francisco. During those four years, the Giants secured one National League West title (2021), the franchise’s first since 2012, and went 2-3 in the 2021 NLDS against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
Kapler also managed the Philadelphia Phillies for two years prior to his time in San Francisco and spent 2014-17 in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office as their farm director.
