The MLB offseason is off to a slow start, but some big names have started to come off the free agency board.
Sonny Gray has inked a deal to join the St. Louis Cardinals. Aaron Nola is back with the Philadelphia Phillies on a seven-year deal.
Will the San Francisco Giants get involved and bring in some free agents by the end of The Winter Meetings? As we inch closer to December 4th-7th’s festivities in Nashville, Tennessee, rumors of the Giants’ intentions in free agency are beginning to swirl.
According to former longtime MLB general manager Jim Bowden, San Francisco is “all in” on spending big money to bring star talent to the Bay for 2024 and beyond:
“I have been told by multiple agents that the Giants are ‘all-in’ on this year’s free-agent market and appear prepared to spend significant dollars on multiple star-level players. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to trade for Soto, but it’s very unlikely the Padres would trade him within the same division.”

Who will the SF Giants target in free agency?
Bowden’s report echoes similar sentiments that other insiders have shared regarding the Giants’ free agency plans, and it’s looking as if Farhan Zaidi will be going big fish hunting this winter.
San Francisco has already met with star third baseman and Gold Glove-winner Matt Chapman, who played under new manager Bob Melvin for five seasons when both were employed by the Oakland Athletics.
The Giants have also been linked to former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger, as it appears that they will look to bring the top free agent outfield bat in on a lucrative contract.
It’s no secret that San Francisco lacks star power, with an emphasis on ‘power.’
Over the past couple of offseasons, the Giants have struck out on several star free agents–power-hitting bats–like Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, and Bryce Harper. Seeking their first 30-home run hitter since Barry Bonds (2004), Zaidi will be aggressive for players like Bellinger, Chapman, and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in the coming weeks.
While Ohtani is expected to have a laundry list of suitors in free agency, multiple reports have indicated that San Francisco is seen as a team that could offer the 29-year-old the most money among all interested teams.
The Winter Meetings are near, and it sounds like the San Francisco Giants want to spend some money. Is this the offseason that we finally see a star ink a contract with the orange and black?
