Not all news is good news in sports, with some unfortunate news coming the way of Tashaun Gipson Sr. this week.

Reports emerged Tuesday afternoon that the former San Francisco 49ers safety has been suspended for six games by the NFL for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. No further information regarding the suspension, or what Gipson tested for, is available at this time.

The NFL released a statement on the Tashaun Gipson suspension Tuesday:

“Tashaun Gipson has been suspended by the Commissioner for the first six games of the 2024 season,” the statement read. “He is eligible to sign and participate in all preseason activities, including games; his suspension will take effect as of the roster reduction to 53 players.”

Tashuan Gipson, 33, joined the 49ers on a one-year deal following 2022 training camp. Initially brought in for safety depth while S Jimmie Ward was injured, “Gip” quick ascended up the depth chart, starting 17 regular-season contests. He would follow that up with 16 regular-season starts on 2023, playing a total of 33 games for SF.

The Wyoming native has an an illustrious 12-year career in the NFL, playing for five franchises. Gipson has recorded 684 combined tackles, 68 pass break-ups and 33 interceptions. He was  excellent for the Red & Gold, with a 67.2 and 73.6 Pro Football Focus grade over the past two seasons.

Per The Athletic’s David Lombardi, the 49ers have shown interest in bringing Gipson back for the 2024 season, but a deal has not ben reached at this time.
