Report: Oakland, A’s ‘far apart’ on terms for an extension

If no news is good news, then Oakland Athletics fans should still have some hope. How much hope though, is unknown.
The team’s lease with the Coliseum expires after the 2024 season, forcing the A’s to find a temporary home until their new ballpark in Las Vegas is built. And the earliest a Las Vegas ballpark could be 2028. So there are three seasons where the team’s home is up in the air.
On Tuesday, the two sides met, but according to ABC7’s Casey Pratt, the A’s released a statement saying they “appreciate Oakland’s engagement” but the two sides “are far apart on the terms needed to agree on an extension.” Pratt added in a follow-up post to X that Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao released a statement saying, “Oakland made a fair and reasonable offer to the A’s. We await their response and look forward to continuing discussions as necessary.”
This past weekend, terms of the deals presented by Oakland to the A’s were leaked. According to ESPN and ABC7, the deal from the city includes a five-year lease extension with an opt-out clause at three years.
City’s terms remain the same as I first reported the other day.
✅ 5-year lease with opt-out at 3 years
✅ $97M extension fee
✅ Pay field conversion costs
✅ Sell Coliseum stake to local developer#MLB:
✅ Grant the City of Oakland
exclusive rights for one-year to solicit…— Casey Pratt (@CaseyPrattABC7) April 2, 2024
Sactown Sports host Carmichael Dave posted to X that Sacramento will meet with the franchise on Wednesday.
“All signs point to a deal being struck and an announcement either end of week or early next,” Dave posted.
Good stuff from Casey here.
Agree wholeheartedly.
As for progress:
Oakland and the A’s are still quite a ways apart. They meet with Sacramento tomorrow.
