Major league baseball in Sacramento? It could happen, even if it’s just for a few years.

According to Evan Drellich of The Athletic, despite recent talks between the Oakland A’s and city and county officials about extending their lease at the Coliseum, the organization could temporarily move north while they wait for their new ballpark to open in Las Vegas.

Sacramento is the front-runner to host the A’s from 2025-27 before they move to Las Vegas, a person briefed on the team’s search process told The Athletic on Friday.

Drellich reported Friday afternoon

Owner John Fisher and members of the A’s front office have already visited Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City and Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, both Triple-A ballparks, as temporary homes if the team can’t come to an agreement with Oakland city and county officials about extending its lease at the Coliseum after the 2024 MLB season.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said earlier Friday he expects the 2025 schedule to be finalized by mid-summer, so the league needs to determine where the Athletics will play next year sooner rather than later. Drellich adds in his report that a “decision is expected in weeks, rather than months.”

Sutter Health Park, the San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate, can seat roughly 14,000 fans when at capacity.

When does MLB Spring Training start?

Both the Giants and A’s hit the fields on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Athletics face off against the Colorado Rockies and the Giants take on the Chicago Cubs.
