Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and the Trey Lance rumors are certainly heating up.
Reports surfaced Wednesday morning that the San Francisco 49ers have received calls from other teams regarding the quarterbacks’ status for 2023. While there have been no teams specifically cited at this time, San Francisco has been fielding calls for the 22-year-old gunslinger.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news Wednesday.

“While no trade is imminent, and the 49ers would almost certainly want to make sure Brock Purdy’s rehab continues to go as smoothly as it’s been going, the interest from other teams in Lance has been there,” Rapoport stated in a tweet.
Trey Lance has been a hot topic ever since the Red & Gold moved up to third overall in the 2020 NFL Draft to select him. Only a one-year starter at North Dakota State, the 49ers knew that Lance would be a project upon arrival, but further setbacks have derailed his progress.
Named the starting QB at the start of last season, the QB lasted less than two games before suffering a fractured right ankle against the Seattle Seahawks. The injury has kept Lance on the sidelines ever since, hoping to be fully healthy for the start of OTAs in May.
Only featured in eight contests in two seasons, Lance and the 49ers could be at a crossroads this spring, especially if fellow QB Brock Purdy will be ready to go in the fall.
