While the 49ers may have not made major moves at the trade deadline, bringing back Tashaun Gipson Sr. is a fitting outcome for the perennial playoff contenders.
Reports emerged Tuesday afternoon that the San Francisco 49ers are re-signing the veteran safety to a one-year deal. He will join the practice squad, as the team waives kicker Anders Carlson to do so. Gipson has not played yet in the 2024 season, serving a six-game suspension for performance-enhancing substances.
While SF has been impressed with its’ young secondary, the re-addition of Gipson gives the Red & Gold more leadership on the backend of the secondary.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the news, as local media confirmed the move thereafter.

Tashaun Gipson, 34, spent the past two seasons in San Francisco, initially joining following the 2022 preseason. He carved out a role for himself in those two years, starting 39 games in total for the 49ers. Gipson has racked up 142 combined tackles, 12 pass defenses, six interceptions and one forced fumble in those two seasons.
The Wyoming alum is entering his 13 NFL season, playing for four other franchises. Gipson also made the Pro Bowl once in 2014 as a member of the Cleveland Browns.
Tashaun Gipson’s impact stems further than just on-field production however. His veteran leadership was pivotal in the development of both safeties Talanoa Hufanga and Ji’Ayir Brown, nurturing them into standout prospects for the 49ers. The former made the All-Pro team in 2022, while the latter recorded an INT during Super Bowl LVIII.
Now a year later, Gipson is brought back to add some needed reassurance at the position.
In addition to Carlson’s departure, linebacker Jalen Graham has also been waived.
Tashaun Gipson is BACK ‼️
