The San Francisco 49ers have the offensive line a point of emphasis this offseason, adding another member in Chris Hubbard.

Reports emerged Tuesday morning that the 49ers would be signing the offensive lineman to a one-year, $1.375 million deal. The move gives SF another viable option on the outside, something that has been a priority with quarterback Brock Purdy under center.

The deal was revealed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport Tuesday, with several other media outlets sharing the news thereafter. The 49ers confirmed the move Tuesday afternoon.

Chris Hubbard, 33, is entering his tenth year in the NFL, going undrafted in 2014. He has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans before joining the 49ers. He has played across the line of scrimmage in the NFL, primarily on the right side of the line as a guard or tackle.

The Georgia native played nine games for the Titans in 2023 before going on the injury reserve. Hubbard allowed four sacks and 18 pressures last season. He posted a 69 Pro Football Focus score, along with a 95.9 pass-blocking efficiency grade.

It remains to be seen what his exact role will be with the Red & Gold, with some expecting him to compete for the swing tackle role. That spot was held down by OL Jaylon Moore last season, struggling mightily however when called upon. 2024 will represent a chance to better that unit, with SF both drafting and adding reliable talent in the trenches.

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers

  • May 20-21, May 23, May 28-29, May 31–OTAs
  • June 4-6 – Mandatory Minicamp
