After a lengthy waiting period, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is finally expected to have surgery on his torn UCL this week.
Reports surfaced last week that Purdy would be meeting with Dr. Keith Meister in Arizona to determine if surgery was imminent. Waiting for the swelling and inflammation to subside in the QB’s elbow, Meister seems ready to proceed with surgery at the end of the week in Texas.
San Francisco Chronicle’s Mike Silver was first to report the news Monday, with other 49ers sources confirming the news.

Purdy was scheduled to have UCL surgery in February, but due to lingering inflammation, Meister decided to hold off for the time being. While it isn’t the news San Francisco was hoping for, the team is appreciative of the care their young QB has received from the medical staff.
“I really want to thank Dr. Meister,” 49ers general manager John Lynch stated at the NFL Combine. “He called me when he made that decision. That’s a tough decision to make, but I really appreciate the courage and the conviction to make that decision. It’s all about the best outcome. Is it ideal? No, for a variety of reasons, time being number one you want every waking minute that you have, but ultimately, he’s 22 years old. We want the best outcome. And that’s where Dr. Meister made a really tough decision and we’re very appreciative.”
Brock Purdy suffered the injury to his right elbow on the first series of the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles when outside linebacker Haason Reddick struck his arm while he was attempting a pass. Describing the pain in his elbow as “shocks all over from my elbow down to my wrist, front and back,” Purdy knew right away that something was wrong with his arm. Unable to attempt a pass downfield for the remainder of the day, the 49ers‘ offense stalled out in the second half, causing them to lose, 31-7, to the Eagles.
Expected to make a full recovery from the injury, the 49ers hope Purdy can be ready for the start of training camp next season. But with surgery delayed this long, who knows what will happen over the next six months?
