The San Francisco 49ers have added two arms to the roster for the team’s rookie minicamp this weekend.
Reports surfaced Monday that the 49ers are bringing in quarterbacks Steven Montez and Clayton Thorson to run the team’s minicamp for rookies from May 13-15. Both players have been in & out of the NFL, with both of them unable to see any regular-season action.
Eric Branch with the San Francisco Chronicle was first with the news on Montez. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows confirmed the report, adding that Thorson will be joining his fellow QB in the Bay Area.
The 49ers are bringing in two QBs to run their rookie minicamp, Steven Montez (first reported by @Eric_Branch) and Clayton Thorson. The 6-4 Thorson was a 5th-round pick by the Eagles in 2019. He played seven games last year for the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.

Steven Montez, 26, first joined the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent. He spent his first year with the Washington Commanders, waived by the team in 2021. He has also spent time with the Detroit Lions and XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons. An Oakland native, Montez was a four-year starter at Colorado, tossing 9710 passing yards, 63 touchdowns and 33 interceptions.
Clayton Thorson, 27, was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has spent time with the Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants. The Northwestern alum also spent a year with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers, starting seven contests last year. He finished the 2022 season with 987 yards, 10 TDs and seven INTs.
The two journeymen QBs will now be tasked with helping the 49ers’ rookie pass-catchers in the middle of May.
