While many eyes were on what the Sacramento Kings did Thursday night during the NBA Draft, the Sacramento Republic FC delivered its own big news.
On Thursday night, Sacramento was selected as host for when the team faces off against Sporting Kansas City in the semifinals of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. According to a press release from the Sacramento Republic, this will be the first time these two teams face off against one another.
The match is expected to take place either Tuesday, July 26, or Wednesday, July 27.
The Sacramento Republic defeated the LA Galaxy 2-1 to advance to the semifinals, the first time a USL team has reached the round since 2017.
Sporting KC has “won the U.S. Open Cup on four occasions, winning the title in 2004, 2012, 2015, and most recently in 2017,” the press release says.
