Sacramento sports keep receiving accolades in 2023, with Sacramento Republic head coach Mark Briggs the latest to receive his flowers.
The USL Championship announced Wednesday that Briggs has been named as the league’s coach of the month for April. The England native wins the award after leading the Quails to an unbeaten start in league play, going 5-0-3 on the season. The club also defeated defending eastern conference champion Louisville City FC, 5-0, last month. That win signaled Briggs’ 41st victory with the Republic, the most for a head coach in club history.
“Truly honored and humbled to be named Coach of the Month, but all the credit and praise should go to my staff and players for the performances they have produced against top teams,” Mark Briggs said in the team’s statement Wednesday. “I’d also like to thank the fans and supporters of this club. They’ve been an incredible motivating force, and we’ll need them more than ever to continue making progress this season.”

“Mark has worked tirelessly to build a winning culture in Sacramento, and the team’s performance in April is a testament to that,” Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant stated. “This is a well-deserved honor for Mark that also extends to the entire technical staff, as we continue our quest for silverware.”
Briggs joined the Republic in 2019 as the academy director before being moved to head coach later that year. Since then, the Indomitable Club has been a perennial contender in the USL championship, finishing fourth in league play last season. The squad also reached the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final in 2022, the first time a non-MLS side has made the final since 2008.
After going on a 10-match unbeaten streak to start 2023, the Republic suffered their first loss of the season to Colorado Rapids, 4-2, Tuesday night.
