In case you missed it, Sacramento Republic FC made history last Friday, clinching a playoff spot in the USL Championship. This is only the eighth time in the club’s history that they’ve accomplished this feat, even more impressive that it was done with two matches to go in the regular season.

Led by head coach Mark Briggs, the Quails have had a historic run of form this season, not only in their own league but in cup competition, as well. Becoming the first non-MLS side since 2008 to make the U.S. Open Cup Final, while beating three MLS opponents on the way to the final showdown in Orlando.

The Cinderella story stopped there, losing to the home team, Orlando City FC, 3-0 after 90 minutes of play.

Nevertheless, Sacramento now has its sights set on hoisting the league trophy at the end of the year, a feat only accomplished once in club history.

Current Playoff Position & Where The Sacramento Republic FC Could End Up

Due to results around the league, Republic FC clinched a spot in the postseason prior to their most recent match against LA Galaxy II. Despite a stellar record, Sacramento has stumbled as of late, losing their last three matches in league play. A loss is one thing but to be shut out thrice, that can’t happen and the team knows it.

“We are happy to be in the playoffs but that’s not our focus right now. We just had a long meeting and spoke as a group, and now we have to show that what was said was the truth and allow our daily actions and attitude to do the talking. This group is strong and we will overcome this bump in the road,” Briggs said post-match Sunday.

The Quails currently sit fourth in the Western Conference standings at 49 points with two games to go in the regular season. The top four seeds in each conference host a home game in the conference quarterfinals.

If they continue their losing ways, they could find themselves in fifth place, only five points ahead of New Mexico United. They could also jump up to third place in the West if they end the regular season with wins, only three points behind Colorado Springs FC.

Sacramento’s final two matches are at Heart Health Park facing Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Oct. 9th, and San Diego Loyal SC on Oct. 15th.

The USL Championship Playoffs will occur in a single-elimination format, with hosting rights determined by regular season record throughout, including the 2022 USL Championship Final on Sunday, Nov. 13th

Conference Quarterfinals – October 21-23
Conference Semifinals – October 28-30
Conference Finals – November 4-6
USL Championship Final – Sunday, November 13

All playoff matches prior to the Final will air live on ESPN+. Exact matchups, dates and times for the Conference Quarterfinals will be announced on Oct. 16th
