In just over a week’s time, Sacramento Republic FC will defend their home turf against the Colorado Rapids in the U.S. Open Cup.

The club will host the MLS side on May 9th, in a winner-take-all match to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This is the first MLS club the Republic will face all season.

Sacramento has been on a hot streak to start the new league year, the only USL Championship team to remain unbeaten. The Republic is currently first in the USL Western Conference standings, with 18 points through eight matches.

The Republic has fared well in the Open Cup thus far, defeating Crossfire Redmond, 5-4, to kick off the 2023 campaign. A few weeks later, the Republic hosted fellow USL club Oakland Root SC, gutting out a 1-0 triumph over their rivals.

“I thought it was a gritty performance from the guys you know,” head coach Mark Briggs said after the match. “When you face a local rival like Oakland and what they bring to the game, it’s always gritty and it’s always a battle. I think you saw that throughout the game. It wasn’t really free flowing. There’s a lot of stoppages, a lot of fouls. So we had to handle that and adapt. But we’re in the draw tomorrow, and that’s all that matters when playing a cup competition.”

The Republic will face their first MLS club of the campaign, hoping to make the Round of 16 for the second straight year. Sacramento went on a historic run in 2022, becoming the first non-MLS team to reach the Open Cup Finals since 2008, beating the likes of Sporting KC, LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes to get there. The run was halted with a 3-0 loss to Orlando City SC in the competition’s final match.
